Sustainability
Every day at Castilleja, we work to make the Circle even greener. And going green, can save us green. Listen to this podcast from the National Association of Independent Schools.

Castilleja is a member of the Green School Alliance as well as a certified Green Business. To read our Green Business Profile, please click here.
As a certified green business, we are pledged to:
- Comply with all environmental regulations and to
- Take steps to conserve natural resources, prevent pollution, and reduce
waste.
The City of Palo Alto's new waste management program has provien to be a boon for Castilleja. We have reduced our trash from five loads per week to three! Look for new signage around the school indicating which containers are to be used for Compostables, Recycleables, or Trash.
Our work is ongoing, and includes a number of initiatives:
- Paper. Working with students,
faculty, and staff to cut paper consumption and move
to recycled paper.
- Food. Investigating and implementing sustainable
food options on campus.
- Energy. Increasing energy conservation measures on campus.
- Communications: Increasing student
awareness and involvement in sustainability programs.
These programs are simply a start. We recognize that
there are many other areas to be addressed including:
- transportation
- grounds (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, composting)
- renewable and non-carbon-based energy
- indoor air quality
- rain water abatement
- water conservation
- waste, reusing (including composting), recycling
- green purchasing
- integrating sustainable concepts, ideas, and research
into the curriculum
- adopting the Kyoto Protocols and reducing our emissions
to 5.2% below our 1990 levels
