Library

Espinosa Library is pleased to welcome Ms. Jole Seroff as the new Director of Library and Information Services. Library patrons are also welcomed by Public Services Librarian Patty Holubar, Systems Librarian Anu Iyer, and Afternoon Library Assistant Douglas Brown, whose combined careers represent 20 years of service and dedication to Castilleja students.

The library is a hub of student activity. One of the librarians is always available to assist students with information gathering, using computers, and finding books for assignments or pleasure reading. All Castilleja students are members of Espinosa Library; no library card is needed for students to check out books. In addition to more than 14,000 books, 4 daily newspapers, and dozens of magazines, the library has many other resources for students, faculty, and staff. There is a DVD film library of more than 500 films. There are 16 networked computers in the library for academic use--offering Internet access, the library catalog, online databases, and an array of software applications. There is space for more than 90 students in an inviting environment that is conducive to both individual and collaborative work. There is also a dedicated space for classes to meet that includes a multimedia projector.

Please take advantage of additional resources available through the library website. You may access the library catalog and other online resources both on and off campus. The website provides access to a collection of more than 25 subscription research databases. It also hosts frequently updated content, such as blogs, book reviews, current news and local events, useful links, and study aids. In keeping with emerging principles of 21st-century learning, the library website is designed to enhance opportunities for user input and collaboration. New content and applications will be developed throughout the year; be sure to visit our site frequently.

Entering sixth graders and other new students receive library orientations early in the year to enable them to make good use of the resources we provide. During orientations, students have a detailed tour of the library, learn how to search the library online catalog, find out where reserve books for classes are shelved, get an overview of the library Web site, and have their first opportunity to check out books for pleasure or academic reading.

The librarians work with the faculty and students to provide high-quality library services and to develop collections that support Castilleja School's academic standards.
