What kind of counseling is available?
We offer counseling services that promote the social and emotional development of students in support of their academic success. Counseling is available to all students throughout the school day, including some after school hours. These services include individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, parent consultation and parent education.
In addition to providing services to students and parents, the counseling department works collaboratively with school staff and faculty to promote programming that positively affects the well-being of the whole school community. This includes professional consultation and professional development to staff, faculty and administration regarding various social emotional issues that impact students.
What is SEL?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is not a curriculum but an embedded philosophy that focuses on the positive social and emotional development of each student. Research has shown that academic, social and emotional learning are inextricably linked; and SEL can accelerate student learning by increasing students’ intrinsic motivation to achieve, their ability to be attentive and engaged in their work, their satisfaction with learning, their sense of belonging, and their desire to work cooperatively with other students. SEL also helps teachers become more effective, by fostering their own social and emotional development and supporting a caring and challenging classroom climate.
