This year’s student-athletes grappled with the constant uncertainty of whether they’d be able to compete in their beloved sports.
Many Castilleja athletes were grateful simply for the in-person training offered. After Santa Clara County announced competitions could proceed in the Spring, our athletes were determined to make the most of the season.
The Track & Field season ran from the beginning of April until June 19, 2021. In just a short window, the team had a robust season; they competed in WBAL Finals, CCS Preliminaries, and then CCS Finals.
At CCS Preliminaries, Daniella H. '23 competed in the 400 meters and the 4X4 relay team, consisting of Madison R. '22, Samira K. '23, Daniella H. '23, and Perry M. ’24. The 4X4 team narrowly missed the cut to make CCS Finals by .05 seconds! Additionally, Samira K. ’23 qualified for the CCS Finals in the 800m!
On Saturday, June 19, Samira placed 2nd in the 800m at the CCS Finals with a time of 2:11.51 - a new school record and personal best for her! At the Finals, Coach Joey Toney was bolting all around the track to ensure he was reading her splits along the way, showing his endless support for her and the Castilleja team.
Coach Joey Toney credits the team for their success this spring season. "There were times we weren't even sure there would be any type of season, and every girl still came to practice with positive attitudes and a determination rarely seen in high school athletes. I am so proud of how our little team performed at League Finals and CCS, but more importantly, I am proud to coach such a wonderful group of human beings.”
Congratulations to our Track and Field team, and all our teams this year, for your accomplishments and perseverance.
