It has been an action-packed spring when it comes to athletics! Here is your athletics update for all the sports currently competing:
Basketball: JV and varsity basketball got started much later this year with their first practices coming right after spring break, and they quickly jumped into their game schedule from there. We had the chance to host our first basketball game at Castilleja since 2020 on Tuesday, May 4th, and your Gators got the victory in the home-opener 37-19 over Nueva. Their next game is on Wednesday at Harker at 6pm. We’ve also had the chance to start MS basketball practices in the past couple weeks, and the 6th-8th graders are doing great!
Golf: The varsity golf team had a nice showing in league play finishing in the middle of the pack in their tough West Bay Athletic League. They finished their regular season back in mid-April and since then have been eagerly awaiting the WBAL Championships, which will take place on May 18th. Following this will be the CCS Championships on June 9th for any individuals who qualify. This team has been putting in the practice to get ready for play-offs, and it shows!
Soccer: The varsity soccer team currently sits in the number one position in their league! With just one loss and five wins, this team is on fire! Their one loss came to Nueva in a close 2-3 decision, but don’t worry, they will get their rematch opportunity against this team on Saturday, May 15th at Nueva! Their next game is on Tuesday, May 11th on the road against Harker at 4pm.
Softball: Your Gator softball team has had a great season with big wins as well as close battles against top teams. Their last home game was a dominant one with a 10-0 win over Harker, and their next home game is this week on Tuesday, May 11th against Notre Dame Belmont at 4pm. This team is wrapping up their season in the next week and a half with just four games left—Finish strong, Gators!
Swimming: Castilleja had the chance to host two swim meets this spring, and both went extremely well for the Gators. We hosted Mercy Burlingame and Notre Dame Belmont on April 28th, and we also just hosted a meet on Friday, May 7th, with Notre Dame Belmont and Pinewood in attendance. It is so wonderful seeing our swimmers compete on campus again! Many Casti swimmers got CCS cut times in the past two meets, and the next competition for these student-athletes is the WBAL Final on Saturday, May 15th!
Tennis: The varsity tennis team’s short-but-sweet season wrapped up right before spring break, and the team had an awesome 3rd place finish in the WBAL upper division. The team had two back-to-back close 4-3 wins that defined their gritty effort during their season. Now, they are applying for an at-large bid into the CCS tournament and expect their first match to take place around Thursday, May 20th. More info coming soon! In the meantime, MS tennis got going again, and the 6th grade squad had the chance to compete this past week for the first time, and the 7th and 8th grade teams compete this Friday.
Track: The track season is going really well! The team started up in late-March right after the cross country season wrapped up, and they hit the ground running from there. They have competed in three large team meets so far, and their third WBAL Meet comes up this Wednesday at Menlo. This team will continue to prepare for the WBAL Finals on June 2nd, and this just in, the CCS Championships for all who qualify will follow shortly after at Soquel High School in Santa Cruz!
Volleyball: The varsity volleyball season finished a few weeks back, and MS volleyball is going well now with practices and even a few games coming up! We have our first MS volleyball game this week and two more next week. The first game is for the 6th graders on Wednesday vs Menlo at home!
Water Polo: The JV and varsity water polo teams have been doing a tremendous job this season. The JV team is undefeated at 4-0, and the varsity team has just one loss and seven wins! Their one loss came to Gunn in a close 10-13 decision a couple weeks ago, and they will get their rematch against this #1 team on Thursday at home for a chance to take back the top spot in the league. Their next game of the season is on Tuesday at Paly, JV 3:30pm and varsity 4:45pm.
Each week you can catch as many as eight teams competing, and many of those competitions are being livestreamed for families and friends to enjoy. You can catch all home, on-campus sports (basketball, swimming, water polo, and softball) on our Castilleja Athletics Facebook Livestream! Competitions at public facilities, such as Rinconada for tennis and El Camino Park for soccer, are open to spectators, but social distancing and mask rules apply. Keep supporting your Gators this season!!!
