Varsity Tennis Tops NDB in Home Opener
The Casti varsity tennis team competed on Thursday, March 11th for the first time since the end of the fall season in 2019! The team gave amazing effort and support throughout the match and finished under the lights with a 5-2 team score over Notre Dame Belmont.
The singles players went out first and competed in four tough contests. At number one singles, freshman Julia Z. ’24 had an amazing showing in her first match for the Gators varsity team and topped Notre Dame’s player in straight sets - 6-3, 6-3. At two and three singles, Lucy and Yonu competed hard but eventually each fell to NDB in close straight-set losses. At number four singles, Mariel G. ’21 competed with senior confidence and poise to close out her match 6-1, 6-4 and even the score 2-2 heading into doubles.
The second-round matches headed out, and Castilleja came out swinging in doubles! Sophomore duo, Paisley and Donya, made quick work of their match at number one doubles winning 6-2, 6-0. Junior duo, Jenny and Carolina, also earned a quick lead at number two doubles and closed out their match 6-0, 6-3 – officially clinching the match for the Gators! At number three doubles, Casti had a slow start and dropped the first set, but doubles partners Aramis and Laura battled back to win their match in the third set in dominant fashion with a second set score of 6-0 and a third set tiebreaker score of 10-3! Senior duo Annie and Sierra completed the doubles sweep in the extra number four doubles line to close out an awesome match under the lights.
It was a great day for the Gators, who prepare for their next match on Tuesday, March 16th against Menlo. Both the JV and the varsity players will go on the road to take on this crosstown rival starting at 4pm. Wish them luck!
