The Impact of Giving
Over a century ago, Mary Lockey founded Castilleja to increase equity in education, creating a school to prepare girls to succeed in college in an era when such opportunities were rare. We have come a long way since 1907; more young women are enrolling in colleges and universities throughout the world than ever before, but there is still work that needs to be done to assure that they have equal access to opportunities throughout their lifetimes.
Today, Castilleja is preparing girls to be confident thinkers and compassionate leaders through an innovative and interdisciplinary curriculum that is grounded in real-world questions. Guided by talented and committed faculty, Castilleja students are inspired to become lifelong learners with a sense of purpose. Since the first days in the school’s history, Castilleja has relied on the generosity of our community to offer this transformative student experience.

We have always invested in foundations, policies, and initiatives that support girls and women. Women make up half of the global population and deserve the opportunity to become equal contributors. Over time, we have come to see that education creates the mindset for lasting change. When you have a platform like Castilleja, with a mission to create women leaders who engage in the community, you know that you can really make a difference with your support.

My parents were happy to support our schools while we attended, but they firmly believed it was our responsibility once we graduated. I’ve always been proud to support the place where I lived (in the dorm!) and learned so much, so I have made giving to Castilleja a priority every year since 1980. As a long-time supporter, I hope to serve as a role model for younger alumnae by giving for over 30 years and by designating Castilleja through planned giving in my estate. I am proud to be part of supporting Castilleja’s past, present, and future.

My first step toward my MD/PhD was the fetal pig dissection in 8th grade science with Ms. Barker. I still remember every detail; I even wrote about it in my medical school applications. Castilleja helped me transform from a shy 6th grader to an emboldened scientist. It was such a happy time in my life, and I stay connected in a concrete way through donating annually. Giving back is my way of practicing gratitude, helping me reflect and honor all of the people who supported me and shaped who I am today.
